Alastair Mackie
Relevance to my work:
Mackie's use of everyday objects to create an object that seems very fragile to the viewer is similar to my use of the whiteboard within my work. The whiteboard, like the matchsticks, is a common everyday object and creates a nervousness within the viewer to it's fragility.
"The works of Alastair Mackie re-evaluate the concept of nature versus nurture His sculpture is informed by the notion that identity is built by an underlying unconscious foundation – not that we are simply a product of our own experiences.
To achieve this, Mackie investigates primal urges, science, belief systems, and time; challenging our convictions about the boundaries that separate man and nature. In his production, Mackie is interested in the fact that a statement can be made through the simple re-positioning of an object or medium. He is interested in the conversation between material, form, context- back-story, process, and end point. His works conclude that materials can be anything."
