Willem Kalf - Still Life with Drinking Horn (1653)

Relevance to my work:

Kalf like the other Dutch masters to draws attention to the consumerism within the Dutch culture of the time. This is similar to contemporary culture, however this is not hte area of vanitas that I have focussed upon.

“This is one of Kalf’s most sumptuous still life displays. The drinking horn is made from a single buffalo horn. The foot is a silver tree-trunk to which saint-Sebastian, patron saint of archers, is bound. The lion on top of the horn holds a shield with the arms of Amsterdam. (The unravelling lemon – representing the unravelling of time – is similarly a luxurious item to draw attention to the vanity of human acquisition.)”
