Tacita Dean
Relevance to my work:
Dean’s use of chalkboard drawings creates a fragile artwork. The dust of the chalk is used to give the work a foggy look, adding to the feeling that the work may disappear. In looking at Dean’s work I attempted to draw my flowers on blackboards. I found however, that the blackboard created less definition than the whiteboard and as a key part of my drawings was the use of detailed pointillist techniques to reflect the detail of the human body; this could no longer be accomplished. A chalkboard was a nostalgic medium that reminded adults of being taught in school. A whiteboard is a more contemporary version of the same thing.
