Wolfe von Lenkiewicz
Relevance to my work:
Lenkiewicz uses simply drawn imagery to creative an effective contemporay vanitas. Similarly to the Dutch masters and my own work, Lenkiewicz is using a simple medium that shows off his skill and therefore makes the work an art object that therefore becomes both a reminder of death and a coveted object.
"Wolfe von Lenkiewicz is a master craftsman whose interest lies in creating a new visual language. In his Descent Of Man show he ‘re-sequenced’ iconography from the legendary and the real. He created a hybrid mythology where the sermon from the mount is delivered from atop a battle tank, Christ bound to a V2 rocket and unicorns emerging from the burning Twin Towers. In his more recent work, Lenkiewicz has invoked the specter of Picasso and created a series of breathtaking large-scale drawings that meld everything from Goya to Warhol via Hirst, Marukami and Durer to name but a few."
