Bertozzi and Casoni

Relevance to my work:

This duo use the medium of pottery to create fragile sculptures that reflect the vanitas theme. They often use historical symbolism of the Dutch masters such as insects, butterflies and flowers, as well as more contemporary symbols of death such as the electric chair. The combination of the fragile medium and symbols of fragility and death is something that I want to reflect within my work, in an attempt to create a contemporary vanitas.

"Bertozzi and Casoni create ceramic illusions by updating a traditional medium and taking it beyond all recognition. Whether butterflies flitting about an electric chair or a tray of seemingly rotting fruit, this partnership creates a synthetic world made up of ironic nautralness. By using medium in this way they are abel to free themselves from the conventions usually associated to the "applied arts"."
